Classic Reads

Works by authors of the 19th century may be difficult to find on the library shelf, but are readily available from digital sources.  The NetLibrary is a resource provided by the Library of Michigan and can be accessed through the GDL.  On the GDL home page under Services, choose Digital Library, page down to NetLibrary and click.  The link is also on TeenFusion under digital libraries.  You will need a Library Card from a participating Michigan Library or a Michigan Driver’s License to log on.  After creating an account you will be allowed to check out books or for quick reads, just view the book through the NetLibrary.

Google Books is another great source for hard to find books.  Working with many libraries, Google is making available in full text, books in the public domain or books out of copyright.  Items long hidden in storage areas or in un-accessible stacks have been digitally reproduced and linked to Google Books.  Publishing houses and authors have agreed to allow Google to feature current titles with links to libraries and book sellers where they may be borrowed or purchased.

Google Books and the NetLibrary are ready to use 24/7 with an abundance of untapped information.  Discover the digital difference.

Internet Public Library

Check out the TeenSpace at the Internet Public Library.  Hot Topics include Homework Help, Graphic Novels Guide, FAEQs (frequently asked embarrassing questions), A+ Writing, Poetry Wiki and my favorite, Procrastinator, which features a weekly question to ponder, creating another reason to put off what you should be doing. The IPL was created by University of Michigan School of Information graduate students in 1995.  Today it’s managed by a consortium of colleges and universities with information science programs.

24/7 Access to the GDL

Need homework help?  GDL online resources are available 24/7.  Links can be found on TeenFusion under Issues or Study Tools.  From the GDL homepage look for the word Research near the top center of the page.  Don’t forget to search the digital library or netlibrary for ebooks or audio books.  Over the weekend, I listened to a collection of Edgar Allan Poe short stories downloaded from Overdrive, our digital library.  Feedback on our homework help database would be appriecated.
