Find New Music

Tech Trainer| Category: Music, Share Your Thoughts | 0 Comments

One of the newest music services I’ve been using for a while is thesixtyone.com and I thought you new-music lovers out there might want to check this out.

The service lets you find and listen to new music by genre and popularity.  The music will stream over the Internet, but you can also buy most of this music DRM-free from amazon.com’s MP3 download service.  Your purchase supports the artists directly as well as thesixtyone. No RIAA involved. No messy DRM to worry about. There are many tracks you can download for free as well.

What’s really interesting about this site is how you vote for your favorite music.  Voting (called “bumping”) has a cost associated with it.  The newer a song is, the more points it costs you to bump it.  If a song you bump gets bumped by other people, you earn points.  You can also earn points by listening to new music in something called “The Rack”. When you sign up for a free account, you get 95 points to use for bumping songs.

It’s fun, it’s exciting to find new music, and it makes it so easy to expand your musical horizons.  Check it out and let us know what you think or if there are any other great new music sites you use!

Last summer the GDL sponsored a concert featuring the bands, The High Strung and a local group, Arcadia.  The acoustic performance by Arcadia illustrated their musical influence by such artists as Dave Matthews Band, Sublime, Coldplay, Phish, Bob Marley and several others.  Since performing at the Grand Blanc Library in July 2007, they have released their debut album, “Some Songs for You.”  Check them out at www.myspace.com/arcadiami or http://arcadiabandonline.com and see where they are playing next.
